Client: "We're still reviewing that deliverable internally."

Translation: This isn't urgent anymore.

Client: "Let’s circle back next week."

Translation: We're hoping you'll just keep waiting.

Client: "Let's pause for now and revisit next quarter."

Translation: This project is dead but we don't want to say it.

You're a couple weeks into a project.

You've already delivered some of the work.

And now...this 👆👆👆

Most freelancers keep sending "just checking in" emails hoping something will change.

Elite freelancers reframe the entire situation.

When a client is stalling and breadcrumbing you…

First things first: Stop chasing.

Then, put the conversation in your frame.

Send something like this:

“Totally fine to pause, but I’m locking my calendar for the month with some other projects and wanted to make sure to save you room to finish this if it’s still urgent on your side.”

That question does two things →

It reminds them why this mattered in the first place.

And it shows you're not sitting around waiting for updates.

You're a professional with other clients and projects to move forward on.

What if they still don't respond?

Reset the terms:

"Happy to pick things back up when it's a priority again. Here's the bill for the ground we've already covered."

Notice what happens with this message...

You didn't burn the bridge.

But you also didn't let them string you along indefinitely.

You get paid for the work you did.

And you freed yourself up to focus on clients who are actually ready to move.

Because, just like dating…

When a client genuinely wants to work with you, they find a way to make it happen.

And when they don't, they stall (or cancel your date last minute 😉).

It’s not your job to convince the client the project is urgent.

But it is your responsibility as a freelance business owner to recognize when a project has fizzled, bill for your value, and move on.

The freelancers who make $10k+ a month aren't chasing stalled projects…

They know when to walk away and focus their energy on clients who are ready to go.

So stop waiting around for clients to "get back to you" →

Put the ball back in their court, bill for what you've done, and move forward.

Knowing how to handle stalled clients is one of those skills nobody teaches you before you go freelance.
