When a restaurant has a line out the door, you don't need to taste the food to know it's good.

Freelancing works exactly the same way.

And when you make yourself too available to a potential client…

That’s an empty restaurant at 7pm on a Saturday.

Not good for business.

Your leads can't verify the quality of your work before they hire you any more than you can taste the risotto through the glass.

Every interaction they have with you sends signals, and if you’re not being deliberate you can look a little desperate.

Which is never a good look…

But not every freelancer is busy. So how can you make it seem like you are?

If your mind goes to faking urgency & scarcity…

That’s the WORST thing you could do.

Fake scarcity erodes trust and credibility faster than no scarcity signal at all.

Instead, you can create structural scarcity →

Things like batching, building an actual waitlist, setting a client limit on purpose (instead of one that just happens when things get busy)...

Something true enough that you can state it plainly and reality will never contradict it.

Having a waitlist might sound scary, like you’ll lose those clients to available freelancers…

But the opposite is actually true.

The line signals quality to the prospect and pre-qualifies who shows up.

A prospect who waited 3 weeks on a real waitlist is already convinced they want to work with you.

While the guy you squeezed in same-day made no such investment.

(And 99% of the time, those are the clients who question your process, push back on your timeline, and treat your judgment as negotiable.)

You don't need to be the busiest freelancer in your market.

Build a line with intention and you’ll become the freelancer clients are willing to wait for.

Best,
Jamie
