Every market has a spectrum…
(And you’re probably sitting somewhere in no man’s land)
One end of the spectrum is commodity freelancing:
interchangeable, price-sensitive, easily replaced.
At the other end is the category of 1 freelancer:
specific, irreplaceable, priced on value rather than comparison.
Competition is fiercest in the middle, where freelancers are differentiated enough to not be pure commodities, but not specific enough to be uncategorizable.
AKA, no man’s land →
You win some and lose some, but the business feels like a constant negotiation between visibility and value.
At the far end of the spectrum, your positioning is SO SPECIFIC that the market stops being a market…
It’s your DIRECT LINE between a specific problem and the only person who solves it (YOU).
3 things create a category of 1:
Specificity of problem
The more precisely the problem is named, the fewer people can credibly claim to solve it.
Specificity of client
The more precisely the client is described, the more intensely they recognize themselves in the positioning.
A perspective nobody else has articulated
The point of view that comes from solving this specific problem for this specific client repeatedly, at a depth that produces GENUINE insight about why their problem exists and what it ACTUALLY takes to fix it.
This is the hardest part to replicate because it can't be faked…
It comes from real experience and it shows.
When all 3 are present, the category creates itself.
You don’t have to claim to be the best…
Cuz you’re the only one who does this specific thing for this specific client with this specific perspective.
That claim, when it's true, is unassailable →
Nobody can outbid, outportfolio, undercut on price, or directly compare.
The category of one is hands down the most defensible position in freelancing.
And this positioning gets stronger for you every year as the proof, the case studies, and the depth of expertise accumulate.
For everyone else, the crowded market gets harder to compete in year after year as more freelancers enter it.
While you are making the competition irrelevant.
Best,
Jamie
