Have you ever wondered how some freelancers seem to have an all-access pass to top brands

Meanwhile you’re struggling to get noticed?

Even if you’re a great freelancer, there’s more to recognizable brand deals than kick-ass deliverables →

The problem:

The biggest names in any industry rarely go to the effort of finding their own freelancers cold.

They’ll still do interviews, they just want to start with vendors that have all been vetted by peers

The benefit of solving it:

You have trust going into meetings with top brands and have more opportunities to land those projects.

Why what you’ve tried has failed:

You've been waiting and hoping for big brands to notice you (or worse, cold messaging random people that work there asking if they need your help).

Here’s how to solve it:

Networking.

Your network includes 3 categories:

Your friends & family- They know you personally and can attest to your character and work ethic.

Your clients & past clients- These are satisfied customers who can speak to your professionalism and quality.

Complementary freelancers- Your fellow freelancers can open doors to collaborations and referrals based on who they have in their network.

Any one of these three categories can lead to a top brand.

And once you get on the inside with a big brand, a bonus fourth networking tier becomes accessible →

Inter-departmental networking within the company.

You may have done some work for the HR department of that company, but now the Product Team is looking for someone.

Make it easy for HR to recommend you to them.

When you impress one department, more opportunities can become available to you.

So it all comes back to networking, which is really about being valuable.

If every time someone came to your door, they had a solution to a problem you’re currently solving for, you’d always open the door for them.

If you have a brand in mind that you’d like to work with, chart the path there through your network.

Put the name of the person you need to reach on a piece of paper, and then look at your network.

See if, using your network, you can get to that person in 3 moves.

For example: You’re trying to work with the Communications Team at Google.

You don’t know anyone at Google. Nobody in your network knows anyone at Google.

But your Uncle Bob’s logistics company works with an agency, and (because they buy a lot of media) that agency has a rep at Google, and that rep at Google knows the person on the Communications Team you’d like to get in touch with.

Network your way to the brands you want to work with.

Best,
Jamie
