Every discovery call is an opportunity, even when they say “not now”
It’s just a different one…
The problem:
Discovery calls end with the client saying “we’re not ready” and you never speak again.
The benefit of solving it:
"Not ready" clients become ready to buy thanks to your well-built client pipeline.
Why what you’ve tried has failed:
You treat "not now" as a closed door, so you never know the real reason behind why they weren't “ready”.
(And you can't do anything to move them towards “ready” if you don’t know why they are now…)
Here's how to solve it:
Most people who say they’re “not ready" haven't actually thought through what “ready” means.
Ask 3 questions →
What does “ready” look like?
What's in the way of that right now?
What would need to change for that to move?
This gets them to think out loud instead of just deflecting, which keeps the conversation open AND gets you real information instead of a polite brush-off.
Over time you’ll see the same 2-3 reasons mentioned again and again.
Treat each one as a step in your lead gen pipeline.
Budget is a common one, meaning they need to justify the spend →
You could build an ROI breakdown, a before/after case study framed around cost, a one-pager that makes the internal case.
Now you’re speaking directly to a specific barrier a specific type of prospect in your niche actually has.
Build your content, lead magnets, and outreach all around moving people through those named barriers and you’ll start hearing from those prospects who weren’t ready a few weeks ago…
We talk about insights like these every week inside The Freelancing Program.

P.S. Asking "What would ready look like?" is also one of the most useful things you can ask a prospect who's on the fence…
You get them defining success in their own words, which makes the rest of the conversation a lot easier.
