When you finish a project with an hourly rate, you've just undercut your own earnings

It's the paradox of the hourly pay model, and it's time we addressed it.

The problem with hourly billing:

Not only are you working against yourself (the more efficient you become, the less you earn), you’re also charging for the wrong thing.

The client isn’t buying your input, they’re buying your output.

The benefit of solving it:

A flat rate gives you income predictability, so you can focus on delivering high-quality work without watching the clock.

It allows you to guarantee you’re getting paid for your value to the project.

And finally, it enables you to charge for each stage of a project before it happens, not after.

Why what you’ve tried has failed:

You’re afraid of working more for less due to a lack of understanding on how to correctly implement a flat rate model.

Here’s how to solve it:

Before setting a flat rate, you need to have a detailed understanding of the full scope of your work. 

Consider the complexity of the project, the skills required, and the time needed to deliver high-quality work. 

Prioritize the value you're providing, not the time you're spending.

If you're solving a significant problem for your client or helping them achieve an important goal, your fee should represent this.

Don't forget to account for potential roadblocks or complications that might arise, and to factor in your costs (subcontractors, library assets, gear rentals, etc).

Setting the rules.

Design the production schedule in a way that maintains your margin.

Consider how many edits the client will get and how many days they have to provide those edits.

At what stage of the project are certain aspects locked (aka, not changeable without budget or timeline implications)?

Put all of this into your agreement and over communicate throughout the project so that the client is reminded what their obligations are at each benchmark.

And when the client starts requesting additional work mid-project, quote that additional work at another flat fee.

A lot of freelancers struggle to make this transition, so if you're feeling uncertain, try applying the flat rate model to a smaller project first.

This will give you the chance to test it out, experiment with your pricing, and learn how clients respond.

Switching to a flat rate model is a process.

But I promise it’s worth it.

Making this change doesn't just change how you bill.

It sets you up to have more time, a predictable income, and the ability to actually scale your business.
