Stop paying the Solo Tax

Most people I’ve met go into freelancing without anyone to look to for advice, support, or help

(I was one of them.)

Hell, when I started 17 years ago, I was freelancing before I even really knew what freelancing was

Then I learnt that going at it alone costs way more than you think...

The problem:

You're wasting your time and energy looking up answers to common freelancing questions (like pricing, scope of work, contracts, retainers), second-guessing everything and losing your freelancer confidence in the process. And even more troublesome – you don’t know what you don’t know!

The benefit of solving it

You take action, build your skills, make money, and feel like a pro.

Why what you’ve tried has failed

Figuring out the freelancing game on your own only gets you so far. Plus with all the conflicting info out there, it’s hard to know what’s actually good advice.

Here’s how to solve it

Put yourself in rooms with other freelancers who have been in your shoes.

This can be done in-person and/or online through things like masterminds, events, local business associations, memberships (like The Freelancing Program), coworking spaces, Facebook groups, LinkedIn groups →

Anywhere freelancers actually gather to talk shop.

Get in these rooms, and then exploit the hell out of their experiences…

(Don’t just be a lurker).

You need to actively engage –

  • Ask specific questions.

  • Share your struggles.

  • Compare notes on what's working and what isn't.

When you stop trying to figure it all out on your own and start talking to other freelancers regularly, you stop feeling like an imposter

You know what to put in your contracts to protect you from scope creep.

You can spot scams from a mile away (in fact, several other freelancers fell for the same one you almost did).

New tools, hot offers, niche market trends.

Instead of spending your weekend researching this stuff  →

You jump into these groups and ask other freelancers what's actually working for them.

One of the great things about freelancing is the independence you get.

But independence ≠ isolation.

It just means you get to choose who you surround yourself with.

Don’t underestimate the power of being around the right people.

Best,
Jamie
