You won’t get consistent clients with a portfolio…
You need several.
(HINT: whether you are a newbie or been at it for a few years, you need to keep this in mind! →)
The problem:
You’re trying to make one, all-encompassing, hyper-effective portfolio to entice any and all leads to want to work with you.
The benefit of solving it:
An effective portfolio allows you to enter a sales discussion in a strong position.
If you get the portfolio right, you don’t have to spend any time convincing a lead that you’re capable of solving their problem to get the job.
You simply have to demonstrate that you’ll be a pleasure to work with.
Why what you’ve tried has failed:
You’re making the client work by sending them to one place with everything you’ve got, and it’s up to them to put in the effort to picture success with you.
Here’s how to solve it:
Make several smaller, laser-focused portfolios that demonstrate different use cases of your services.
Then send the one that makes the most sense for each specific project and shows your ability to solve that client’s specific problem.
By building very intentional portfolios and demonstrating specific results, you make it crystal clear to the client what a collaboration with you would look like.
To win the freelancing game, you want it to require as little effort as possible for your leads to imagine the end result of working with you.
It’s a lot easier for the lead to make a decision to hire you when your portfolio is full of projects that look exactly like what they need.
And when they can clearly picture a collaboration with you, they are more likely to hire you over another equally qualified freelancer.
So, if you know the lead wants one thing and you have the choice between a generalized portfolio or one that only shows the best examples of that one thing, which portfolio are you going to send that lead?
One of your new, laser-focused portfolios.
You’ll stand out and be that much more likely to get the job.
Best,
Jamie
